handgun holsters

Is there one type of leather over another to use when making a holster? I know some have a lot of salt in them to preserve the leather and can.So I've got the bug, and will be picking up a pf9 soon. Any suggestions on holsters? I'm used to IWB /SOB or 5 o'clock. I wouldn't mind an ankle rig,The Gen 4 Glock pistols are here...sort of. Glock has had some of the new Gen 4 pistols in the hands of some industry insiders and police agencies.Lawman Glenn B over at Ballseye's Boomers has a great post on his holster preferences. It is very much worth reading. To me, holsters are almost as fascinating as handguns. How essential are holsters? Ask Plaxico Burres when he gets out ...Prolific gun writer Massad Ayoob is recognized around the world as one of the foremost experts on the concealed carry and use of firearms. Not only.Let me start off this one by saying - I don't care what type of a holster you get to carry around your handguns. I do think though that if you carry you should carry in a good quality holster. As for my preference for holsters, ...Authorities in the Australian state of Victoria are investigating defective gun holsters, which are still being used by area police. According the The Age,+10 for the M-Tac. Best thing I have ever bought that was gun related. At our last congregational shoot I even carried it instead of my paddle holster. For me it's the most comfortable holster I have. ...There is going to be a second Open Holster Protest protesting our unfair handgun carry laws in MD, but this one is in Baltimore at the Inner Harbor.Kydex, a durable leather-alternative, has quickly become a favorite holster material for gun enthusiasts alike. Although it's not as sturdy as its.
I live in Idaho and have a concealed weapons permit so i have carried every day for the last 5 years, I miss San Diego and want to return but I have questions about firearms considering i have grown accustomed to having them with me all the time. First the shotgun question I have a shotgun that I sawed off the barrel to 18.5 inches just above legal and have a pistol grip on but i was worried that since I modified the barrel myself it may still be illegal. also can i keep this under the seat of my truck if it is unloaded? Also I had a couple questions about handguns first of all i know you have to lock them in a case while in the cab of my truck, if locked in a case do they need to be unloaded? also do i need to keep the magazines somewhere else, or is in the case ok? If i decide to open carry my pistol do i need to step out of my parked car to remove it from the case and holster it? or can i do that while sitting in the car? And one final question I have a kel-tec .380 which has a belt clip like a pocket knife, can i just clip this to my belt and leave the magazine in my pocket or do I need a physical holster? Oh one more thing when carrying my 9mm in a holster are there any certain parts of the gun that the holster has to cover or does it require a strap? I like the very minimalistic xd subcompact holsters but dont want to be in the wrong.

Thanks for your patience
Erik
I know its restrictive but i cant picture myself never carrying again I thought of one more question as well I know you can open carry with a belt holster but what about a shoulder holster? An uncovered shoulder holster is considered open carry in Idaho but then again its the wild west up here

Hi my name is amish and well i just turned 18 last thursday. I was always interested in handguns and i like the way they look and would feel safe with it. i wanted to know how old do you have to be to get your handgun license in NJ? Can i also bring it with me if its in a holster were ever i go in NJ? what would the laws be if i got the handgun?

I currently have a Walther P22. I love the gun's comfort and very small size which makes it very easy to conceal and very comfortable to shoot. This gun fits without a holster comfortably in my waste line on my side. I read several reviews and found that most people either love it or hate it. I'm kind of in between. It does like to jam if you do not keep the gun oiled frequently. I'm looking for something with a higher caliber with good reliability and around the same size as the P22. I do not particularly like Glock because I hate not having a hammer. So if anyone has any suggestions on a similar higher caliber but yet very small pistol with a hammer please let me know. I just need the same or similar dimensions and also light weight. Thanks.

My Criminal Justice teacher presented this question for homework:

A man and his wife were returning to their car after seeing a movie. On the way through the parking lot, they observed three males walking towards them. The three were loud, boisterous, and using profanity. As the three approached the couple at about 100 feet away, the profanity was turned towards the couple. The male in the middle was about 6 feet tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, his hands in his pockets. The male to his left, about 5'6''/5'7'', wearing a backwards cap, had his hands behind his back. The third member was average height, 5'9'' or 5'10'' and had his left hand in his pants pocket. At approximately 50 feet from the couple, the three members of the group, as they were walking towards the couple, parted. The man in the middle continued straight towards them, the man to his left veered about 15 feet to the left, the other veering fifteen feet to the right, creating an ark. The male of the couple stopped walking and told the three men to stop where they are, do not come any closer, and that he had a concealed weapon. The three men continued walking towards them. The man pulled out his handgun and aimed at the three thugs. He warned them again, in a loud, clear voice. "DO NOT COME CLOSER OR I WILL SHOOT." The three men hesitated, but then began to walk quickly towards them. The shots were loud enough for two police officers on duty on the next block to hear. As the police arrived, the man holstered his weapon and was standing where he had fired, holding his wife who was sobbing uncontrollably. The police, guns drawn, observe three people down, not moving, a weapon on the ground next to the victim on the left, and a man holding a sobbing woman. Write, in order, the steps you would take concerning the scene.

Any help is appreciated. I don't have enough of an idea about police protocol to be able to answer this question confidently.

Just received an e-mail from a friend that a Airline Pilot has been reinstated to his job after being fired when a pistol he carried discharged and put a hole in the aircraft. No info as to what make hand gun or caliber it was though the pilot was licensed and had attended the federal class to carry it on flights.
I carried a revolver and later a semi auto for over 32 years in law enforcement and removed and holstered it thousands of times and never had one go off. When assigned to evening shifts I along with many of the men and women I worked with would draw and re-holster our weapon dozens of times during the shift of eight hours and never have a discharge.
I say the guy was screwing around with the gun and it went off my friend defends the guy saying that it was a defective holster as declared by his attorney and upheld by the aritrator hearing the case.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ?
Red River the incident took place in 2002 on a US Airways flight from Denver to Charlotte the Captains name is Jim Lagenhahn CBC news has released the information today. I had heard of the incident but forgotten about it until my friend e-mailed the information to me today. The Pilot was also a retired military pilot and I had forgotten that.
I own many, many firearms and worked in a progun department for many years and wish I was still there but got too old to be of any real use.
Thanks
Thanks guys I have read your answers and will give you all a thumbs up and that includes you Red, had I gone the extra yard and included all the info related to me your answer may ahve been different.

Not suprised to see that as of this date 10-13-09 nothing about the out come has been in the press.
My friend is a pilot and received his information through a aviation release.
The pilot got a leg up from Homeland Security that maintained the holsters were defective, no information on what holster was in use at the time. If I find out I will share the info with you, sure would not want to get a defective holster and ruin my record of no accidental discharge would you ?
FOUND IT !
Go to US Airways Pilot Jim Lagenhahn
and you will find a report of the incident.
Not suprising no-one can agree on the correct spelling of his last name it is also spelt LANGENHAHN and as you read the print you will find it in both spelling.... I feel vindicated almost.

I saw this a long time ago and have tried before to find out with no success. The vault shows up exactly 19 min into the film and has the brand name Stello (assumed fake) on it. It has a keypad entry that automatically drops down the vault door revealing the gun in a holster connected to both the wall and the open door. This is the best handgun safe I have ever seen. Sure the name is probably fake but someone somewhere had to make it.

I recently learned that my 1911 is a bit difficult to find a holster for due to the fact that it has an accessory rail. Could someone please tell me a website that sells holsters for 1911 handguns that have accessory rails. I really want a Serpa Blackhawk tactical holster but i'm not sure if they fit my type of weapon. Anyways...someone please help!

Can i use a standard hip holster and cover it with my shirt?

I was wondering if my family bought a handgun and ammo and gave it to me as a gift would i be able to walk/drive around Virginia with it showing in a holster legally? And no i have no felonies and am legally allowed to posses firearms.

If you wake up one day and you happen to live in a open carry state like Arizona, and you suddenly see regular people walking around with their holstered handgun and rifles slung over their shoulders...would you be comfortable to see Americans openly exercising their 2nd Amendment or will you call 911 and notify the police?

I am wondering if I can openly carry my handgun inside my holster within my property, is open carry allowed in Texas?

I hope it is, that way I can walk around my property with my 1911 by my side.

The man was at one of the crazies' town hall meetings.
Why did this character need to "pack heat" at a political rally? He was allowed to carry it, for he was in compliance with state law concerning hand guns. What's your opinion?
KYKY29550 & Helen,
Thanks for acyually READING the question before responding to it. I've noticed that a lot of right wing sympathizers in this forum fail to read the whole question before "shooting from the hip"!
Wiz: read the question--nowhere in my text did I say anything about gun laws needing to be changed.
To the other gun nuts here:
If he was so "afraid" of being attacked by union "thugs" then why didn't he just avoid the rally?

They always try to rhyme "9" or "22" in their songs with other words, but do they realize how minimum the stopping power on those two calibers are? They should stick to .40 S&W or .45 ACP on their handguns.

Also, do gangstas realize how dangerous sticking guns in their pants is? Why not by a belt and a cheap holster at least? Haven't they seen 8 Mile or heard what Plaxico Burres did?
Jeez Missy, it was a joke. I asked a similar joke question talking exclusively about holsters a few months back.
@representin: .223 & 5.56 are exactly the same size. The only difference is the metal used. And the US isn't going to replace the 5.56 with the 7.62 anytime soon. 5.56 is too accurate, and most assault weapons with a 7.62 is inaccurate and heavy and has terrible recoil issues.

Thanks for the serious answer though. Didn't think I'd get one in here. lol

i really need a good g3,g36c,p90,or ump at least im already going to get a 65$ m92f gas powered blowback handgun and a holster and i need a primary weapon any good recommendations? thanks....

I have a Glock. Someday I will have a light for it, but I still want to carry it in a leather shoulder holster. Any ideas?

I have a Glock 23, .40. I have been in law enforcement for about 9 months. I waited so long to get it now that i have it i'm wondering what, if any, holster is ok.

I just recently purchased a Jg bar off of airsoftgi. I dont really have a problem at distances (for obvious reasons) but im worried about other people getting to close for it to be very helpful. In the matches i play with my Friends the closest i got to someone (they came to me) was about 10 ft which would be really hard to try to use the Jg bar on them. I want a small gun like a handgun or a mac 11. Preferably one i could fit in a shoulder or thigh holster. I'm only looking to spend around 20 dollars. I am not a fan of gas pistols, because i read all these reviews about how the valves always leak and the fact that you have to buy the actual gas doesn't settle well with me. Im not really looking for a spring one (unless it performs amazingly) either because if i have like 2 guys heading towards me and they're within 20ft then i would like something semi auto such as an electric pistol. Although i heard electric pistols were unreliable. I would just like to know what the best course of action is and where i could get a good deal.

I just recently got my concealed carry weapon permit. I am considering different handguns for carry on me in a side holster. I am looking for a semi auto handgun..as I am open as to caliber. I have been looking at a Glock 23 but I would like an external safety. So what should I get?
The reason for the safety is just that I have talked to some people including a Sheriffs Officer I know and they are big into having an extra safety that just the trigger safety. On my research it is hard to find anything that has the reliability and cost effectiveness of the Glock 23.

i purchased a new Fobus Pistol holster and it holds the gun too tight how can i loosen it up or "break it in" with out messing up my gun by taking it in and out for a few hundred times
it does not have a screw in the bottom

i recently purchased springfield xdm as my first handgun. i love it. only have a couple hundred rounds in it. this weekend i am purchasing a beretta 92fs.
in a couple weeks i am taking my conceal and carry course and then i will be able to carry in minnesota. i was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on a good gun for carrying? im kinda looking at the springfield sub-compact or maybe the walther pps. also, anyone have a crossbreed iwb holster? ive heard good things about them and will probably be purchasing one unless i hear otherwise.

i know that you cannot carry a concealed weapon in WI, but i've heard that it is ok to carry a handgun as long as it is in open view, like being visible on a holster. is this true? and if it is, what re some of the rules that go along with it?

I've often wondered exactly what a peron who is carrying a concealed handgun is required to do to keep his weapon 'concealed'. For example, which of the following situations could get a person in trouble with the law if someone noticed and complained:

1. Wearing a weapon in a belt holster concealed by a sports coat; person leans forward giving someone a view of the weapon.
2. A person noticing, say, the bottom of a holster, or the outline of a grip under a shirt.
3. A person trips, falling into another person carrying concealed and brushes or falls into or accidentally grabs at the weapon.

Basically, at what point are you no longer meeting your obligation to keep your concealed weapon concealed?

Basically its the gun, case, two magazines,40 rounds of hollow points,a conceal carry holster for 300 bucks. he said i can pay half now and half in two weeks when i get paid again. i dont really need the gun and its a nice gun but i just wanted to know if it was a good deal that i should jump on. its in very good condition. anyone have any experience with this handgun

okay, so i am turning 16 soon, and i am looking at getting a .22 caliber handgun. my dad will get it for me for me to "own".and possess. it wont be my holster gun, that resides with my CZ 75B. but for maybe a "back up" or something, or just a target handgun, i want to know what is viewed as some of the best. i have looked at browning, cz, walther, ruger, and a few others. which would be the best functioning and most reliable? and can you tell me what the cost is? and can you give me the link please? also....(i know a lot of Q's) i would like to know if you have any other suggestions for a .22 pistol?
thanks a ton!
my dad will buy it for me, hence birthday and present. he can give it to me legally in Idaho with his consent, and a signed document. and i still live in the house so it is perfectly legal.
carytop
i just like shooting out at the range.
i also enjoy girls and cars and other guy stuff
shooting out at the range is just a fun hobby. there is nothing scary about it at all. just answer the question please and not some smart dumb remark. thank you.

see above /\
thanks!

would like to know if the 9mm sccy or skyy is a good gun or is it a pice of junk someone has one for sale wants $250 comes with holster & mag holder

Is there a paddle holster that fits the FNP-45? I have looked all over and cant find any.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
Except for my son Billy's pet mouse named Chris.
I'm not really sure where I'm going with this.

Anyway, my wife in her kerchief and I in my cap,
Were asleep after a long day of Christmassy crap.
When then, from the chimney, there arose quite a clamour,
"There's someone in the house" my frightened wife stammered.
I reached for the bedside, grabbed my handgun and said,
"This trespasser's getting an ass full of lead"

I crept down the stairway, and slid down the hall,
And, handgun in hand, I peered 'round the wall.
The burglar wore red, and stood fat and stout,
With a large burlap sack, to hold jewelry no doubt.
Who this guy was, I just couldn't place,
For a bushy white beard covered most of his face.

Now, I'm not a bad person, I think you'd agree,
But you just don't break into a man's house, you see.
"Hey you" I said, as he spun 'round with a twitch,
"Merry Christmas, you son of a bitch!"
I fired a shot as he dove to the floor.
Through a flurry of tinsel, I fired twice more.
"Please stop!" he yelled loudly, "You don't understand"
"Stay away from my family, you disgusting old man"

With his finger on his nose, he lept with a burst,
And dashed for the fireplace, but I got there first.
I pushed the muzzle into his beard white as snow,
When suddenly a small voice behind me cried "No!"

I turned 'round and saw it was Billy, my son.
With his pet mouse in hand, he said "Put down the gun.
What are you doing? Don't you know who that is?
Couldn't you tell by that red hat of his?
That's Santa Claus, dad. It's jolly Saint Nick.
Now put down the gun. Come on, don't be a dick."
Billy was right, this old man meant no harm.
I holstered my gun, as he outstretched his arm.
In a flash he took the gun right out of its holder,
And fired a shot into my left shoulder.

"Goddamnit!" I cried as I fell to the floor,
While the burglar made haste toward the jewelry drawer.
"I feel kind of bad" he said, filling his sack,
"But you believe in Santa, so cut me some slack.
Maybe next time someone breaks into your house,
You won't listen to some six year old kid with a mouse."

Then he yelled, as he ran off with my bigscreen TV,
"Merry Christmas to all. Well, maybe to me!"

the R&S is only because it is a very active section

I want something that conceals comfortably in a iwb holster.
I'm only interested in Glocks (I have experience shooting my neighbors' 9mm, 40 cal, and 45.) I found that Glock feels best in my hand.
Hopefully, someone can either ease, or confirm my worries about each caliber, and help me decide on what might be best.
I was trying to decide between these Glock handguns:

Glock 19: I've heard that Glock specializes in the 9mm, but I'm worried about lack of stopping power.

Glock 23: I've heard the 40 cal is an almost perfect self defense round, but I'm worried about it's ability to penetrate as good as a 9mm. (For me, I want superior penetration, along with good expansion).

Glock 30: From what I read, the 45 caliber offers excellent stopping power. However, I'm worried that the short barrel slows down the bullet, and I'm concerned about lack of penetration and lack of expansion.

Glock 32: I've heard that the 357 sig has extreme penetration, but I'm worried that it is expensive, and hard to find at local stores (especially in an emergency).

I've also held a Glock 29 at my nearest gunstore, but the grip is way to big for my hands (I have small hands).
I'm scheduled to take my CCW class in the beginning of next month.
I really want a caliber that penetrates between at least 15"-18"

I got my new 40 caliber pistol home from the gun show and realized it has no safety. It being my first handgun I overlooked this because I was so excited over how good the gun feels in my hand. They now make the .45 with a thumb safety but can anyone tell me why they would manufacture a gun with no safety? If you pull it out of the holster and accidentally contact the trigger it could be trouble.I love the gun but I have to be on my toes 100% when handling loaded.

What hand gun is the best all around handgun. here are some criteria
Shootability
concelability
power
Female friendly or to big in her hands/ to much kick
accuracy at realistic defence or hunting distances
good for people new to hand guns
good for people who helped invent the handgun
price of ammo
ability to reload and be cost effective
types of ammo available
types of holsters available
availability of left handed holsters.
availability of aftermarket lasers and lights

However, if I walk down the street with my handgun in a holster the police will arrest me. How can they arrest me? And what would the charge be?

I have a beretta 92 and the store has been robbed at gunpoint in the past. I have an in the pants small of back holster. I plan on getting my licence later on and the store has no firearm policy. Just wondering if I'd get in trouble for carrying already.
thanks everyone but it turns out that even if i had a licence i would still get in trouble, the business gets more than 51% of its income from alcohol sales making it a feloney for any licenced individule. getting a licence in TX means a 10 hour class, firerange test and an application fee. long wait but ill do it either way.

I need to buy one for my SR9 and i need some options for a good holster? i want something that will protect it from the elements and be very ergonomic. I need some Makes and models so i know what to look for when im buying it????? thanks a lot for the help
whats better FOBUS or NIGHTHAWK Paddle holsters??? WHY??????

As stated above, I'm looking to buy a blackhawk serpa cqc holster and I'm uncertain which one to buy to fit my kahr p9. Any advice would be great! thanks.

so im in a law enforcement class where i need to provide my own handgun with 400 rounds of ammunition and a holster. my brother will give me his gun if i can legally have it. keep in mind that i am 19 years old.so am i legaly able to own it? or will i have to have it under my dads name and have his permission to use it?

I just purchased a new handgun and need a holster for it. I like the paddle holster or an inside the waistband holster. I want to be able to carry easily in the summer and don't want to ruin the finish on the gun. I want to know which type of holster works best with this model of gun, I would prefer somebody who owns one. Thanks.

I bought a new ruger sr9 handgun and i want to get one of those septa holsters for it but the gun is so new thay dont make one. So i was wondering if i could use one from a diffrent brand of gun ?

Can I carry a handgun while camping in Virginia without a concealed permit?

-if i holster the gun where it is visible?

I am getting a handgun or 2 for my dad. He lives a little bit out side the city and has a small farm. There has been a rash of break-ins and a few other factors that have lead me to my current decision to get him one.

What are a list of 5 guns that pack a punch, but are relatively easy to use? id like it to be of above average quality and common enough to get a holster for. (money is not exactly an issue, but under $1000 would be nice). I have looked at a small s/w 38 special revolver that was recommended to me by a police officer buddy. He carries it as his ankle gun. It seems to be a pretty well built small gun for in a truck glove box or a dresser drawer. But id like to get him another one that is a little bigger. That is my 10 cents. lol.

Thanks for all your help.
When i talked to him about it, he wanted a hand gun more than a shotgun, but those mentioned seem pretty popular. And it doesn't matter if its a revolver or a pistol

Don't mean to sound like an idiot here just fairly new to guns in general. Just got my first gun a Springfield XD-M 9mm and havn't gotten to try it out just yet at the range. I have am pretty new guns only have experience with the gun I used in police academy which was a Sig 226. With the Sigs they have the external hammer and if you decide to stop firing with ammunition still chambered you can just decock the weapon and reholster. How does this work with an internal hammer? They emphasized over and over again in academy never to holster a cocked hammer because it can be very unstable. Thanks in advance.
okay and for some reason yahoo censored a word that is not even profane in its context. The word above is supposed to be c.o.c.k.e.d.

i just got a 9mm and i am not 21 yet so i can not get my carry concealed in nc. but i would like to have it in my car, so i wanted to know if i need any license to carry it in my car.
and also how do i need to have it so it will not be concealed

How do armored car guards get a license to openly carry rifles or a shotgun in their truck and always have a holstered handgun on them at all times when no private citizen is allowed to get a permit? And fyi Illinois is a no-issue concealed carry firearm state.

A guy from my high school recently got arrested for a car break-in where he stole a couple rifles from some guy's truck. I guess that's all he's being charged with, but at school, it's more or less known that he has been doing this for years:

-Stealing unsecured firearms from cars

-Getting lists of hospital patients and ages from a friend at a local emergency ward, and robbing the houses of old people for guns and jewelry while they are in the ER

-Pulling armed robberies/assaults on people with holsters, and taking their concealed pistol (that's called "smash and grab" - you ambush the guy with the holster with a blow to the back of the head, then your friend hits him from the front, then you both take the poor guy's gun)

Apparently he has mostly been reselling these stolen guns to gangs in Dallas and Ft. Worth.

But why has it been so easy for him to get away with this? Why don't Americans do a better job securing their firearms? I'm 17, but I have a handgun. But when I'm at school, it's in a secret hidden compartment that a home robbery would not uncover. That's just common sense.
It's a gun responsibility rant. If you're a gun owner like me, you should be responsible with your firearms! A lot of the illegal firearms with gangs or on the street could be prevented from getting there if people took simple steps to secure their firearms.
