I agree with everyone on the M1911 type pistol. The Berreta 9mm is not the weapon to have as a Special Operator. Any .45 Cal pistol will do the job. Most people will tell you 45acp (automatic colt pistol) is the best self defence caliber, simply not true. Read FBI research on penetration , my guess is no government agency still uses .45 as a duty weapon 9mm and .357sig are the most stopping power of all calibers.

I already have a ruger lcp for concealed carry. I am shopping for something full sized for the truck and home and carry in the winter when I'm in heavier clothing or jackets. Specifically, I'm thinking .45 ACP in a 1911 style.

All that being said, I am thinking long term here, I want something that might concievably last me for decades if the current you-know-whats in office do what I think they might and I can't ever replace it, or the prices or availability get out of whack. I also want something that is just as accurate as a kimber but that will be highly reliable. Keep it mind it's for self defense, and not for competition.

It would also be great to be able to swap out a .22 barrel for cheap practice.

So - all that being said, is the difference in the Kimber worth it? Is it that noticeable? If I'm practicing with a friend that already has a kimber, am I going to suck (aside from personal ability or the lack thereof) ? Will it last that much longer? I know they are supposed to be excellent guns, but, I am wondering exactly how excellent relative to the rest. The price for the Kimber Custom II isn't that much more than for any other decent 1911, so that's not a dealbreaker one way or the other. In fact - compared to some colts, or the Les Bauer, it's anywhere from just less to much less.

1. Yup. I agree w/ the support of the NRA and joined for 5 years this time. I'd join for life but didn't want to let loose of the cash at that moment. For awhile afterwards, they were signing folks up for free and I got some friends on board.

4. Yes - I'd considered the Para-Ordnance but they are Canadian and all things being equal -yes, I'd like to buy American. That being said, Colt has done and said some things as a company that lean them a bit further left than I'd prefer to support.
The Springfield XDM is on my list of possibilities. My late father left me a Springfield Arms .22 rifle that he used to help feed the family with during the depression (squirrel and rabbit - not deer obviously). It wasn't new when he got it. But - it will still nail the end of a beer can from a fair distance away every single time and has no prob with hyper-velocity stingers.

I'm looking 2 buy a pistol to bring with me to work. I'm a contractor and I dont work in the nicest areas. I have been attacked before and the only thing that made them run away was that i let my rottweiler out of the truck. I cant decide between a Glock 17 or a Colt 45. i am a supporter of the 2nd amendment and would like to teach my son to shoot a pistol, he is 1 and half and i think it would be a good age to learn to use a gun. i was thinking of letting use my .357 colt python or my .45 acp 1911... ill hold off on letting him use the 12 gauge until hes 3-4 years old, i'm not gonna tell the wife because she may get mad at me but i think its his right as an American to learn to use my guns... what do you all think about that?


OK I have seen talks of a .45 acp being useless against bear, but there have been reports of a 1911 equipped with a mech tech CCU upper being capable of stopping a bear.

How accurate is this?
What kind of bear did it stop? A cub, full grown, grizzly???

On another note, how effective would a .45 long colt cartridge be against a bear? If it is effective, which bears can it stop?

I am just wondering as I am trying to build an emergency kit and was wondering if I had to utilize something else like a .357 or 5.56mm. I would prefer to keep within a pistol caliber or an AR-15 pistol.

This kit would contain essentials plus a lee portable reloader to make loads on the go.

Please keep in mind that I do understand the potential uselessness of a 5.56mm but if it does have penetrating power with a hollow point and is capable (or if there are reports that may not be worldwide documented) I would appreciate the information.

Also, IF the .45 acp is not effective enough, what is the minimal caliber capable of doing so.

My son's father is giving me a Taurus .40 cal pistol. I have tried looking it up online, but can't seem to find what it looks like...anyway..How much kick does this gun have? Is it a good one? Is it known to jam? Any info on it you can give me? What is the best way to keep it safe from my kids without locking it up where I can't get to it quickly if I need it. I have 2 boys, 13 and 10. My 13 yr old has handled guns..but only 9mm and .22. Should I familiarize them with it(not let them shoot it..recoil) but let them handle it and look at it(unloaded of course) so they won't be fascinated with it and want to sneak and look? This is for home protection. Moving to a new house and today I go over to clean it b4 moving and the damn neighborhood is swarming with heavily armed cops searching for someone on the run..made me feel quite a bit nervous. I know its pretty short for a chapter, but this book will have many chapters in it. NEXT CHAPTER: Alex is in a POW camp, and he must escape. However, he encounters many obstacles, and may not survive.

The pistol I am interested in acquiring is the Thunder 5 pistol that chambers both .410 gauge and .45 long colt ammunition. I have checked that the company that manufactured the pistol, (MIL, Piney Flats, Tn.) is on the list of approved firearms. The problem that has risen is that to get the firearm shipped into the state, a ballistic fingerprinted bullet would be required that was fired by the manufacturer. However, MIL went out of business in the late 90's so I am currently unsure of how to go about getting the said fingerprinted bullet. I've asked around at the local gun store but they were unsure of how to solve this problem as well. Thank you for your time and I appreciate any feedback.

I am going to buy a Hi-Point 45 ACP(automatic colt pistol) and was wondering if the 45 long colt would work in it? I will be using the gun for mostly walking around the woods and for hunting. I know i can use 230 hot loads for the 45 acp for hunting, and i also know the 45 long colt is better equipped for hunting.

I am not worried about licenses and papers cause i can get all that. i still need to get my concealed sidearm license, concealed assault rifle, and all the way up to my class 3 license. I am still working on getting every kind of license i can get. I just need to know which gun i should get first?


I have been in competitive shooting for several years however, I know very little about pistols. I am looking for recommendations on what pistol I should carry. I am six foot three inches tall so small hands or powerful kicks will not be a problem. I would like to know what is the most reliable pistol available? Is colt over rated? And should I go with .45 or 9mm?

I need to have more a direction on which guns I should even bother renting and which manufacturers I should avoid.





I just turned 19 a week ago. I plan on buying a colt .45 model 1911 within the next month or so. But just a second ago i saw that on Cabelas website, you gotta be 21 to buy pistol ammo. Is this just with Cabelas or is it like that all over the state? I mean, i'm legally an adult! No one ever gave me any grief whenever i bought my shotgun shells from Walmart at age 15. What gives? Can i even buy the gun?

Okay my Dad loves the Colt .45 1911 Military pistol and they have one at a local gun store for like $600!!! So I went online to look for an airsoft version. ShortyUSA had one and since I enjoy learning about WWII I happen to know what they look like, this one looks like the real one, EXACTLY!! I also airsoft myself a lot to and it looks good to me (FPS: Good, effective range good, etc.) What do you think? The reason why I choose the Colt .45 is because he's turning 45 and the caliber of the real gun is .45 get it? I think he'll like it. Oh and it is all metal, except for the grip that is plasitc. And on ShortyUSA they only cost like $49.99 and shipping cost is $1.99


Not a complete stranger to guns or shooting, but I'm looking to make my first gun purchase. I want to learn more about taking care of the guns and getting better at shooting. Not looking for a home defense gun or anything like that.

Looking for a good pistol that has good control and isn't too difficult to shoot. I've shot a .45 Colt semi auto before and had some problems with control. I had better luck with a S&W .38 revolver.

Any suggestions on a good first pistol purchase?

i have the colt 1911 .45 gas blow back kwa. it was $130 new and i plan on selling it on ebay. how much should the starting bid be? how much would you have to increase by every time you made a bid? if anyone wants to buy it plleeeeeaaaaase tell me. its a great gun, im just selling it becous i want a tm scorpion.

Base your answer on how long it will last, not jam, accuracy, and most importantly GUN to Dollar ratio. The pistol would be use to hunt, home defense, and range shooting, I don't care about recoil.

Thanks all. I actiually own the RIA .38 super 1911. I also had so aftermarkets added. It jams with wadcutters, it feeds perfectly with ball and some brands on hollow points. Very good accuracy, even better than the spring field 1911 in that category. I also own the S&W sigma .40 VE, no jams, slightly less accurate, all around great gun. I have a laser sight mounted on the weird rails. This is a great pistol that has lasted me over 10,000 rounds. I was considering the EAA Witness hunter, but I will look into Dan Wesson, as I have high regards for CZ arms.

Does it matter if the rounds are hollow point or not, or does the powder load affect its performance in stopping power.

I'm shopping for a home defense gift for my mom. She lives in Hawaii where there are more & more B & E's and gangs exploiting opportunities to impose themselves on the local residents.

She has an old .32 snub revolver, she's getting old but still goes out to Koko Head Range (Oahu, Hawaii) to practice every two weeks with my dad. My dad favors the .45 colt full size.
My mom was an MP long long ago in the coast guard. My dad, served in the Nam (three tours till he lost a leg).
