Gun control has never one time in history been proven to equal crime control. All the statistics I can find show that throughout history gun control has never worked. Take Australia, Great Britain, and the District of Columbia for example. In the US the states with the lowest per-capita gun violence and overall crime rate are the ones with the almost non existing gun laws. If guns cause crime, why do states like Montana where 95% of the populace is armed have such a low crime rate. The number of guns in the US has been increasing year after year, yet our crime rate has been steadily dropping. 38 states have seen a drop in their crime rate after enacting concealed carry laws. DC banned handguns, immediately afterward their crime rate skyrocketed while the rest of the countries went down. California has a much higher than average gun violence, yet they have the strictest gun laws in the country. So since no one has ever been able to show a case of gun control equaling crime control why do 65% of liberals despise guns? What is your true agenda? Also, why do you mention hunting when referring to the second amendment? What part of the second mentions hunting or target shooting? We all would like to see less gun violence, so why will so many liberals not get behind something that works? When you get rid of guns you have an environment where only criminals are armed, therefore they are far braver than they would be if they knew there was a good chance their victims could be armed.
I am an Independent. My opinion is both parties are corrupt, so this has nothing to do with the right. I'm asking this based on a debate I participated in in school. I just want to gain some info as to why so many Liberals support stricter gun laws when the ones we have don't work. I am for background checks, and anything that will truly help keep criminals and the mentally ill from obtaining guns. That is where it ends though, laws that do basically nothing but create red-tape for the law-abiding I see no use for.
Wow some of you ppl are so fucking stupid. Like the "cows in Montana" comment. Please look up per-capita please.

TD, could you share the statistics that show the states with lenient gun laws have as much if not more crime please? The answer is, no, I bet you can't. It simply isn't true so good luck with that.
LOL Paul RN, you are a classic example of just how fucking ignorant the gun grabbers are. Your answer is so baseless, and without fact it is pointless to even respond to. According to the most recent polls only 3% of America feels gun control is an important issue, while 73% of us feel the laws we have are enough. 44% thinks we have too many useless gun laws that do not work. Point is, my question is mainly driven by curiosity. The people with the "all guns are bad" mindset are so few it doesn't really matter what drives your ridiculous opinions.
Luke, if its the guns doing this why have the countries that have virtually disposed of guns not seen a drop in gun violence and their murder rates? I encourage you to do some research on the subject. For starters look and see who commits 0ver 80% of our gun crimes. Cars, cigarettes, swimming pools, and fast food kill far far far far more children than guns so do these things need to be banned? Ever wonder why school shootings didn't happen 50 years ago? Back then children had much more access to guns than they do now, they could walk into any hardware store, convenient stores, etc and buy them. Yet they never thought about shooting up their students. Notice that every major shooting in this country has happened in an area where the left has successfully banned guns, leaving ppl defenseless.

The law could include requiring the individual to receive a firearm safety course in order to be permitted. Would school shooting be eliminated due to shooters not knowing who was armed? What about the crime on college campuses across campus. Would all crime rates go down. College is not a public school. Not anyone can be admitted. What would be the difference from people in the "village" just outside campus limits carrying concealed weapons to moving a couple of blocks onto campus limits. I am really just looking for other peoples input on the subject. I do have my own set opinions but I always like to hear both sides to an argument.
Rick's answer made me think of another option. What about requiring the student to attend a 1 semester long class that taught the firearm safety as well as markmanship training.

I just took the class to get a concealed weapons permit. I don't really know that much about guns and was wondering if anyone could help me choose a good one for self defense. I actually shot my first pistol after completing the course. I want whoever answers my question to take into consideration that although I am a beginner I don't wish to purchase a sissy 22 to learn with. Whatever I get will be thoroughly played with at the shooting range. (I want to buy 1 gun, not 1 to practice with & 1 to carry) So with that said...

I've done some research online and most people say to get something your comfortable with. I think is that is 100% correct. However, i don't want to end up blowing money on a sucky handgun. I need someone that knows what they are talking about to help me out.

I don't like revolvers.
I want something that won't jam when i need it to work.
I want something with a high rate of fire.
It needs it to be practical as i will wear it most of the time, especially at work.
I would like for it to hold a good amount of rounds.

Basically, I want to know if i should get something like a 45 or 9mm. Also, I'm wanting to know what the good brands or models are and what some suitable prices are so I'm sure I don't get ripped of by the people at the gun store. I'm not fixed on a 45 or 9mm they are just some suggestions. If you have specific model/brand guns that would be awesome. Any info would really help me out. It would also be nice to know where to get a good deal as well, for instance buying at a army navy store vs. a shooting range.

thanks guys
Forgot before, i want single action. Don't want to have to pull hard for the first round...
i like the looks of the glock, what about those?
starting to lean towards a glock, what about the glock 30 45cal???

What about the guns that are too big to conceal such as 12 gauge shotguns and hunting rifles? If no one was allowed to carry a handgun anymore, then they're be no way to go in a bank or store and rob anyone beause when you're carrying a rifle, everyone notices. If no citizens were ever allowed to carry handguns again but were allowed rifles and shotguns, the crime rate would be down since you can't conceal it on you.

CONCEALED weapons question? ?
I am an ex Military Police Officer - used to carrying a colt 1911A1 .45 in a holster on my hip on my right side, up high so it was harder to snatch.

Now, I'm not a cop. I have a concealed handgun permit.

First - it is difficult to change my mentality from that of "patrol" or "infantry" or "boarding party" to "man about town with paranoia left over from the service". But at any rate...

I have a Star .45 from Spain that is smaller than a 1911 (Six rounds, vs.8 plus a shorter barrel), but I'm having a hard time concealing it. I usually wear baggy pants so I CAAAAANNNNN put it in my right pocket - but easy and quick access isn't so easy or quick (by police or military standards).

I have a reversible holster that I can wear INSIDE my belt on my right side with a baggy teeshirt hanging over it which makes access very quck - but carrying uncomfortable.

However, a great deal of the time I wear a dress shirt, tie, slacks but no suit coat, making concealment more difficult - so shoulder holster is out.

In the back of my belt is out - I'm wondering about an ankle holster? Anyone use those? Or any other suggestions? (A grenade in the crotch of my pants? jk - lol)

rape or violence against women in general? Why or why not?

For some reason I'm just not too confident in the power of guns for "self-defense" - and unless a person is going to concealed-carry his/her handgun in public, s/he doesn't even have access to it all the time or in situations where rape or violence can occur.

DC has had an outright ban on handguns for more than three decades, yet the anti gun folks are constantly looking for solutions for the District's high rate of gun crime. How ironic it is that a city that should be an anti-gunner's "perfect place on earth" is constantly plagued with some of the highest rate of "gun violence" in North America. While dismissing logic and burying their heads in the sand, these leaders continue to try to avoid the unavoidable and simple conclusion: Criminals don't obey the law and have been ignoring the gun ban since its inception. Only the law-abiding obey the law. Why do you think they resist doing what needs to be done there? => Remove the ban on guns and allow conceal carry to force the decline of gun violence in DC?

Here are my issues:

1. All the school shootings (Columbine, Northern Illinois, Virginia Tech) happened in these so-called "gun free zones". I'd push for legislation that not only allowed but REQUIRED all college faculty and staff to undergo the full concealed-carry training and carry loaded handguns at all times. That would stop sending the "nobody can shoot back" message to would-be shooters.

2. Bush's tax cuts were weak, timid, and only half of the solution. I want a constitutional amendment with a flat tax rate of 5 % for everyone. Permanently.

3. Build a 30-foot tall concrete wall along the entire border with Mexico. Deport all illegal aliens in the country now.

4. Drill for oil in Alaska, the U.P. of Michigan, off the Gulf Coast, and wherever else we have it. Tell the tree-huggers to take a hike.

5. Once we're energy-independent and gas is 32 cents a gallon, nuke the entire middle east.

6. Withdraw from the UN - they can get money from France.
Yam, you're right that bombs cost money. That's why taxes should be lowered. at 5% tax rates, the economy would have the opressive burden lifted. It's about getting a slightly smaller percentage of a much, MUCH bigger economy.
let me clarify - 5% as a MAXIMUM for tax rates, Congress could obviously lower it to 0.5 % if they wanted to :)

and, YES, I'm not serious about nuking the middle east. They'll collapse without all the oil money.

However, we should pull out of the UN. And never give a penny in foreign aid to any country that bad-mouths the U.S. or speaks against us. You are free to say what you want to say, but we are not duty-bound to give you money for it.
Regarding guns for college professors:

A. part of the process for concealed carry laws is a background check, which includes mental health history

B. if a professor starts shooting students, they students and/or the other professors can at least shoot back, instead of being slaughtered defenselessly.

C. REQUIRE professors to have concealed carry permits, ALLOW students to do the same

D. Most professors are total leftie liberals, who will resign before touching a gun. A good way to break the thought-police / brainwashing monopoly that liberals have on our college students.

From just looking at the statistics, states that allow their citizens to carry concealed weapons have lower rates of murder, violent personal crime (vs property) than states that do not.

Moreover, from an international perspective, countries such as Switzerland and Israel have gun ownership as high or higher than the US. They also have considerably lower murder rates than the US.

What can we do to allow the American people who follow the law to have concealed handguns? Is there anything I can do to support this?
DC: would you please look at statistics? I believe you're attacking your own assumptions and not reality. (For instance, Switzerland has a lot less murder.) Also, if someone wants to shoot someone, a law is obviously not enough to stop them.
